George Wayne Thornbrough World War II Army Air Forces B-26 pilot. During the Battle of Dutch Harbor in 1942, piloted his airplane and launched a torpedo at a Japanese aircraft carrier that was launching strike fighters at Dutch Harbor. The torpedo hit the target but did not explode. After returning for fuel and to rearm, the crew returned to attack again. Upon returning from this attack, they were unable to make the runway at Cold Bay and crashed approximately 50 miles away. The wreckage was found the following month. There were no survivors. Captain Thornbrough was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions. |
