Paul J. Selva graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in the Class of 1980, and completed undergraduate pilot training at Reese AFB, TX. During his 32-year Air Force career he has held numerous staff positions and has commanded at the squadron, group, wing and headquarters levels.

Prior to his current assignment, as a Lieutenant General, Selva was Vice Commander, Pacific Air Forces, Joint Base Pearl Harbor- Hickam, HI.

On 29 November 2012, Selva was elevated to the four-star rank of General. In a change-of-command ceremony on 30 November 2012 at Scott AFB, IL, General Selva became Commander, Air Mobility Command, as the legacy of leading global mobility operations was passed to him from General Raymond E. Johns Jr. Air Mobility Command's mission is to provide rapid, global mobility and sustainment for America's armed forces. The command also plays a crucial role in providing humanitarian support at home and around the world. The men and women of AMC - active duty, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve - comprise nearly 134,000 personnel who provide airlift, aerial refueling, special air mission and aeromedical evacuation.

On 4 May 2015 it was announced that the president is selecting General Selva to be Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

General Selva is a Command Pilot with over 3,100 hours in C-5, C-17A, C-141B, KC-10, KC-135A and T-37 aircraft.
