On 15 January 1969, Captain William Allen Currence was serving as a helicopter pilot with Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 212th Combat Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, CPT Currence was killed in the crash of the helicopter he was flying. His body was recovered.
