Herbert A. Loree entered the U.S. Army on 26 February 1942 at Fort Custer, MI.

On 17 October 1944, then-Private First Class Herbert A. Loree was serving with Company C, 111th Engineer Combat Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, Seventh U.S. Army.

On that day, PFC Loree’s unit was in action against German forces. PFC Loree’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross.

On 31 January 1945, then-Corporal Herbert A. Loree was declared Missing in Action in France during the Siegfried Line Campaign.

Private First Class Herbert A. Loree, United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 111th Engineer Combat Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 17 October 1944. Private First Class Loree's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
