John G. Williams, Jr.
Admiral, U.S. Navy

John G. Williams, Jr. was born in 1924 in Astoria, OR, the son of John G. and Julia (Hoare) Williams. John grew up in Ilwaco, WA, where he graduated from Ilwaco High School. John was a fourth-generation resident of the Peninsula; his great-great-grandparents were Welsh immigrants who settled on the Peninsula in the 1880s.

John graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 as a member of the class of 1947. He graduated from the Submarine School in 1949.

He served in USS Pompodon (SS-486), USS Chivo (SS-341), and USS Stickleback (SS-415). He was Commanding Officer of USS Sterlet (SS-392), USS Haddo (SSN-604) and USS Daniel Webster (SSBN-626), and the Squadron at Rota, Spain.

On 1 July 1981, Williams was promoted to Admiral and assigned as Chief of Naval Material (CNM). He retired from the Navy in 1983.

The Williams Building is the Submarine Extended Operation Cycle/Selected Restricted Availability Training Building, located on the pier of the Submarine Base. It provides a major capability to San Diego-based submarines which would otherwise have to move to a shipyard for certain repairs. It was named to honor Admiral John G. Williams, Jr.
