Henry Aristo Wiley Admiral, U.S. Navy Henry Aristo Wiley was born on 31 January 1867 in Pike County, AL. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1888. He served in USS Maple during the Spanish-American War and attained his first command, USS Villalobos, in 1904. During the First World War, Wiley commanded battleship USS Wyoming (BB-32) attached to the 6th Battle Squadron of the British Grand Fleet and received the Distinguished Service Medal for his "outstanding performance." After various shore and fleet commands, he was promoted to the four-star rank of Admiral on 8 September 1927 and served as Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Fleet. He retired from the Navy in 1929 after over 40 years of service. In Retirement Admiral Wiley served in the years that followed as Chairman of the Maritime Commission and in other important government posts. He was recalled to active duty in 1941 and the next year he headed the Navy Board of Production Awards. Admiral Wiley retired once more on 2 January 1943. Honors USS Henry A. Wiley was named for him. Death and Burial Admiral Henry Aristo Wiley died on 20 May 1943 in Palm Beach, FL. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, in Section 2, Lot 883. |
