Robert Wasserman
Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army

On 24 April 1945, then-Second Lieutenant Robert Wasserman was serving with the 127th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division, U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

On that day, 2LT Wasserman’s unit was in action against Japanese forces while pushing up the Villa Verde Trail during the Battle of Luzon. On 24 April a Japanese plane dropped a single bomb that scored a direct hit on a building that housed the Supply Platoon of the 732nd Ordnance Company. In addition to numerous casualties, virtually the entire supply stock of the Company was destroyed. Many injured men were rescued from the burning building by others in the unit. 2LT Wasserman’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him, at the cost of his life, the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross.
