Thomas Alfred Rutherford was the son of Clara Rutherford. Prior to his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he lived in Rochester, NY.

On 6 January 1944, Gunners Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class Rutherford was serving in the USS Augustine. On that day, he was killed when the Augustine collided with a merchant ship 60 miles off Cape May, NJ.
