Biography: | ||||
Harold Bushnell "Slats" Sallada Harold Bushnell Sallada was born on 23 January 1895. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in the class of 1917. In 1941-42, Commander Sallada was Commander of the seaplane tender USS Albermarle (AV-5). On 23 August 1942, Sallada was promoted to Captain and assigned as Director of the Plans Division, Bureau of Aeronautics. In 1944, Rear Admiral Sallada was Commander, Carrier Division 26. From 24 July to 1 August 1944, he commanded a task group of five escort carriers at the Battle of Tinian in the Mariana Islands. He later became Commander of Carrier Division 6. From 1945-47, Sallada was Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics and, during this assignment, he was instrumental in the development of slant-deck aircraft carriers. In 1948, Vice Admiral Harold B. Sallada took command of US Naval Air Forces, Pacific Fleet (COMNAVAIRPAC). In May 1949, Sallada and his staff moved their headquarters from Pearl Harbor, HI, to COMNAVAIRPAC's present location at Naval Air Station, North Island, near San Diego, CA. Upon his retirement in October 1949, he was advanced in rank to four-star Admiral. * * The Act of Congress of 4 March 1925, allowed Navy officers to be promoted one grade upon retirement if they had been specially commended for performance of duty in actual combat. These promotions were colloquially known as "tombstone promotions" because they conferred the prestige of the higher rank but not the additional retirement pay, so their only practical benefit was to allow recipients to engrave a loftier title on their business cards and tombstones. An Act of Congress on 23 February 1942, enabled tombstone promotions to three- and four-star grades. Death and Burial Admiral Harold Bushnell Sallada died on 25 April 1977. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
