Charles P. McGuire On 11 August 1944, Private First Class Charles P. McGuire was serving with the 47th Armored Infantry Battalion, 5th Armored Division, First U.S. Army. On that day, PFC McGuire’s unit was in action against German forces when it liberated Le Mêle-sur-Sarthe, France. PFC McGuire’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him, at the cost of his life, the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross.
