Humayun Saqib Muazzam Khan Humayun Saqib Muazzam Khan was born on 9 September 1976 in the United Arab Emirates, the son of Khizr M. and Ghazala Khan. The Khan's (who are of Pakistani heritage) moved to the U.S. when Humayun was two years old, and he was raised in Silver Spring, MD. Khan graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1996, and the University of Virginia in 2000. Khan, who had planned on becoming a military lawyer, joined the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps at UVA with the plan of serving in the U.S. Army to pay for law school. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. In 2004, now-Captain Khan was assigned to Headquarters Company, 201st Forward Support Battalion, 1st Infantry Division in Vilseck, Germany, which was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in February 2004. On 8 June near Baqubah, Khan was inspecting a guard post when a taxicab began approaching too quickly. Ordering his men away from the vehicle, Khan ran forward 10–15 steps and was killed by a suicide car-bomb fitted with an improvised explosive device. The car detonated before it could reach the gates or the nearby mess hall where hundreds of soldiers were eating breakfast. In addition to CPT Kahn, the blast also killed the 2 occupants of the vehicle and 2 Iraqi bystanders. Medals and Awards Bronze Star Medal (Merit) Honors Because Captain Khan was the first UVA graduate to die in combat since the Vietnam War, two University ceremonies were held in his honor. Burial Captain Humayun Saqib Muazzam Khan is buried at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Arlington County, VA, in Section 60, Lot 7986. |
