Evan M. Johnson began his military career as a Private in the 10th Infantry. After earning his way to a commission, he attended the Infantry and Cavalry School and was a student at the War College.
Johnson had been an Indian fighter in campaigns against the Apaches; even against the great Geronimo himself. He was also a professor of military science and tactics at Union College. During the Spanish-American War he led expeditions in Puerto Rico and the Philippines. He served in Washington in the office of the Chief of Staff; and later saw action in Mexico.
Brigadier General Evan M. Johnson ultimately took over command of the 77th Division and led them in Phase III of the Second Battle of the Marne from 18 August - 16 September 1918 in World War I.
