On 8 December 1966, Private First Class Salvatore Peter Cemelli was serving with B Company, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in South Vietnam.
On that day, PFC Cemelli was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
