Leonard James Carter was born on 24 February 1948.

On 8 June 1967, Private First Class Leonard James Carter was serving with A Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade, in Pleiku Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Carter was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
