George Benjamin Byrd, Jr. was born on 7 July 1946.

On 30 April 1967, Private First Class George Benjamin Byrd, Jr. was serving with M Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Byrd was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
