John Thomas Burton was born on 3 June 1946.

On 18 May 1968, Sergeant John Thomas Burton was serving with L Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines, 1st Marine Division, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, Sergeant Burton was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
