On 3 March 1969, Private First Class Paul Joseph Buczolich was serving with A Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in Kontum Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Buczolich was killed in action due to wounds sustained from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
