On 18 August 1965, Hospitalman Apprentice Thomas Richard Brand was serving with Headquarters & Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force in Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, Hospitalman Apprentice Brand was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
