Richard Levurn Baumberger, Jr. was born on 14 May 1947 in Mansfield, OH.

On 5 May 1969, BM3 Richard Levurn Baumberger, Jr. was serving as a boatswains mate on Patrol Craft Fast 9, Coastal Squadron One, Coastal Division Eleven, Task Force 115, U.S. Naval Force Vietnam, near Kien Giang Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, the patrol craft on which BM3 Baumberger was serving came under heavy fire and he was killed in action by gun and small arms fire.
