Biography: | ||||
Carl Louis Doughtie Carl Louis Doughtie was born on 18 November 1940, in Tarboro, NC. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in the class of 1963. In December 1964 he was designated a Naval Aviator and, in 1965, was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Midway. On 10 June 1965, two weeks after reporting to the Midway, Lieutenant (j.g.) Doughtie was flying his 10th mission as a Navy carrier pilot. During the mission over North Vietnam that day, while providing close air support to his fellow Americans, his A-1 Skyraider was hit by a surface-to-air missile and plunged into a mountainside. For more than 32 years, Doughtie officially remained an MIA. Then, in late 1997, the crash site was found and DNA testing on the remains was performed. On 10 November 1998, Doughtie's parents, Marjorie and Carl Doughtie, were formally notified that the remains tested were those of their son. Burial Lieutenant (j.g.) Carl Louis Doughtie was buried on 26 February 1999 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Full honors were afforded. The casket was carried from the chapel to the grave site on a caisson pulled by six black horses. Also in the procession was a platoon-sized honor guard and a marching band. The interment service concluded with a rifle volley and the playing of "Taps." Then, with precise timing, four F-14 Tomcats from NAS Oceana came into view. The aircraft approached in a tight formation at low altitude from the south, into a strong north wind. As a result, their approach was majestically silent until they were abreast of those in attendance and one pilot pulled up steeply to execute the "missing man" maneuver.
