William Montgomery Mitchell William Montgomery Mitchell was a native of Bristol, TN. He attended the Marion Institute (Alabama) before attending the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from the Academy with the Class of 1922. During his military career with the U.S. Marine Corps, he served with the Legation Guard at Peking, China. He also served as a Guard Detachment Officer at the Naval Station in St. Thomas, British West Indies. In World War II he served with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater and later at Camp Pendleton, CA. Major Medals and Awards Bronze Star Medal with Combat Valor Device Death and Burial Colonel William Montgomery Mitchell died on 25 April 1970 at his home in San Diego, CA. Graveside services and interment were at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego. Family Colonel William Mitchell was survived by his daughter, Jeanne M. Dick, of San Diego. |
