William Resor Ammon On 16 April 1968, Second Lieutenant William Resor Ammon was serving with L Company, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. In a battle that day, 2ndLt Ammon was killed in action when he sustained multiple wounds from rocket rounds. Medals and Awards Purple Heart Honors The name William R Ammon is inscribed on Panel 50E Line 10 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Comments About 2ndLt Ammon Some additional details on what a fine officer 2ndLt Ammon was are contained in the book "Battalion of Kings : a Tribute to Our Fallen Brothers Who Died Because of the Battlefield of Khe Sanh, Vietnam" authored by Chaplain Ray William Stubbe (January 1, 2005). 2ndLt Ammon had written home concerning the austere living conditions on Hill 881-S during the Siege and his parents had shared these with local newspapers. Eventually a Congressional Inquiry (CONGRINT) developed in which very high-ranking USMC officers countered that living conditions were actually quite good on the hill! But 2ndLt Ammon came to a tragic end. “He was well-respected by the troops because he was not only a professional Marine, but he cared about his men too, and when he got orders to do things that’s absolutely asinine, he would question them. He wasn’t afraid to question and say, ‘wait a minute; there’s probably a better way to do this.’ He got a lot of respect for that."
