Robert Oscar Welander Robert Oscar Welander was born on 7 October 1924 in Jamaica, NY. Welander graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and shortly afterwards participated in the Bikini Atoll tests in the South Pacific. He next was assigned to duty in San Diego followed by an assignment as Assistant Naval Attaché in Bangkok, Thailand, and Flag Lieutenant and Aide to the Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Pacific Fleet prior to becoming Executive Officer of the USS Epperson. He was Commanding Officer of the missile destroyer USS Semmes and guided missile frigate USS Fox. Welander had successive commands of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotillas Six, Eight and Twelve, deploying twice as Commander of Attack Carrier Striking Group Two of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. He later served as Military Assistant for National Security Affairs to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Plans and Policy. Welander retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral in 1975. Death and Burial Rear Admiral Robert Oscar Welander died on 21 June 2005 in Rancho Bernardo, CA. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
