Herbert Marion Wassom Herbert Marion Wassom was born on 20 December 1938. Wassom, Chief of the U.S. Military Group in Pakistan, was killed on 17 August 1988 when an airplane on which he was a passenger, along with the President of Pakistan, Mohammed Zia ul-Haq, and Arnold L. Raphel, the Ambassador to Pakistan, exploded in mid-air. The plane was apparently the target of extremists in Pakistan and was either downed by a missile or a bomb that had been placed aboard. Death and Burial Brigadier General Herbert Marion Wassom died on 17 August 1988. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
