Frederick Burdett "Fearless Freddie" Warder Frederick Burdett Warder was born on 19 March 1904 in Virginia. Warder graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1925 and then attended Submarine School in New London, CT. He was given command of the newly-commissioned submarine USS Seawolf in 1939. During World War II, he took the Seawolf out on her first seven war patrols and sunk 8 ships for a total credit of 38,900 tons. While aboard the Seawolf, he was given the nickname "Fearless Freddie." For his actions during his seven war patrols, he was awarded the Navy Cross. In 1952, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and became Assistant Chief of Naval Operations for Undersea Warfare in 1955. In 1957, he commanded Submarine Force - Atlantic Fleet. He retired from the Navy in 1962. Death and Burial Rear Admiral Frederick Burdett Warder died on 1 February 2000 in Ocala, FL. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
