Frank Trenwith Ward, Jr. Frank Trenwith Ward, Jr. was born on 25 December 1901 in Raleigh, NC. Ward graduated from the U.S. Navy Academy in 1923 and, by 1926, was designated as a Naval Aviator. His next tour of duty was in flying squadrons on board the aircraft carrier USS Lexington and the carrier USS Saratoga. In 1943 Ward was chosen as the Director of Naval Aviation Operational Center in Jacksonville, FL. He next became the Commanding Officer of the escort carrier USS Shamrock Bay from 15 March 1944 to 1945. Ward commanded Shamrock during the invasions of Luzon and Okinawa. He then was appointed the Commanding Officer of the Saipan-class light aircraft carrier USS Wright on 9 February 1947. Ward then became the Commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy from 1947 to 1949. Ward retired as a Vice Admiral. Death and Burial Vice Admiral Frank Trenwith Ward, Jr. died on 8 February 1976. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
