John Augustine Tyree, Jr. John Augustine Tyree, Jr. was born on 3 October 1912 in Blackstone, VA. Tyree was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and Commanding Officer of the submarine USS Finback during World War II. He and his crew sunk or damaged over 40,000 tons of Japanese hostile shipping. In 1944, he was posted to the White House as Naval Aide to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and then President Harry S. Truman. As Vice Admiral, he attended the Yalta Conference with Roosevelt and the Potsdam Conference with Truman. In subsequent assignments, he served as Deputy Commander of Submarine Force, Atlantic Command, Commander of Naval Forces Korea, Commander of the South Atlantic Force, Assistant Chief of Naval Operations, Chief of Staff of U.S. forces at NATO, and Inspector General of the Navy. He retired from active military duty in 1971. His military decorations included two Navy Crosses, the Navy's second highest award for valor, a Silver Star Medal and three Bronze Star Medals. Death and Burial Vice Admiral John Augustine Tyree, Jr. died on 8 April 2004 in La Jolla, CA. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
