The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Dan C. Leeper, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, A.E.F., near Villers-devant-Dun, France, 2 November 1918.
In the face of intense machine-gun fire Captain Leeper led his company forward to its objective, capturing a machine-gun nest and making possible the capture of a strong enemy position on a hill. This officer was severely wounded during these operations, but his courage was an inspiration to his men in consolidating their position.
