Alexander "Sandy" Sharp, Jr. Alexander Sharp, Jr. was born on 13 August 1885. A 1906 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served on board, then commanded, torpedo and destroyers such as the USS Paul Jones; the USS Queenstown; the USS John D. Edwards; the USS Concord; and the USS Idaho. His staff positions included duty as the Director of the Bureau of Navigation; Director of Officer Personnel; and Director of Naval Districts Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. When war was declared, he transferred to the Atlanta Fleet and assumed command, first of the Battleship Division 5; then of all the Battleships and eventually of the Service Force, Atlantic Fleet. He transferred to the Pacific Theater in October 1944 to command the newly established Minecraft, Pacific Fleet. After the war he held staff positions until his retirement as a Vice Admiral in 1946. He returned home to Welcome, Charles County, MD. Death and Burial Vice Admiral Alexander Sharp, Jr. died on 20 June 1975. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
