John Schouler John Schouler was born on 30 November 1846 in Lowell, MA. Schouler graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1864. After graduation he served in the Civil War as a junior officer onboard the apprentice ship USS Saratoga. He was promoted to Master on 1 December 1866; Lieutenant on 12 March 1868; Lieutenant Commander on 3 June 1869; Commander on 8 June 1886; and Captain on 5 June 1898. For a number of years, he was the head of the Department of Seamanship at the Naval Academy. He was Chief of Staff of the North Atlantic Fleet from 1895-97 and afterwards on special duty with the Bureau of Navigation. He retired with the rank of Rear Admiral in November of 1899. Death and Burial Rear Admiral John Schouler died on 26 December 1917 in Annapolis, MD. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
