Frederick Henry Schneider Frederick Henry Schneider was born on 21 May 1914. Schneider graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1937. In World War II, as a Lieutenant Commander, he was in command of the Destroyer USS Thorn (DD-647) during operations in Leyte Gulf and Surigao Strait, Philippines Islands, from 19-25 October 1944. Schneider remained commanding officer of the USS Thorn until 6 May 1946. In October of 1954, he was appointed the Commanding Officer of the Destroyer USS Willis A. Lee (DD-929). In October of 1960, he was promoted to Captain and assigned as the Commanding Officer of the USS Saint Paul, a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser. Schneider was promoted to Vice Admiral on 31 July 1970. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the USS Thorn in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Death and Burial Vice Admiral Frederick Henry Schneider died on 17 December 1998 in Arlington, VA. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
