Donald Stuart Russell Donald Stuart Russell was born on 22 February 1906 in Lafayette County, MS. He served as a Major in the U.S. Army in 1944 during World War II. He was President of the University of South Carolina 1952-57; Governor of South Carolina 1962-65; and U.S. Senator in 1965-66. Donald Russell served under James F. Byrnes (SC Governor and Senator) during World War Two in the Office of War Mobilization and as Assistant Secretary of State in the first years of the Truman Administration. He later served as a U.S. District Judge and as a Circuit Judge on the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals until his death at age 92. Death and Burial Donald Stuart Russell died on 22 February 1998. He is buried at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, SC. |
