John Paterson John Paterson was born in 1744 in New Britain, CT. Paterson graduated from Yale College in 1762. In 1774 he moved to Lenox, MA, and there in 1775, after the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, he raised a regiment. As its Colonel, he crossed the Delaware River with General George Washington on 25 December 1776. Promoted to Brigadier General on 21 February 1777, he was advanced to Major General six years later. In 1790 he removed to Lisle, NY, and was elected to represent New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1803 to 1805. Death and Burial Major General John Paterson died on 19 July 1808 in Lisle, NY. He is buried at Church on the Hill Cemetery in Lenox, MA, next to his wife. |
