Richard Montgomery Richard Montgomery was born on 2 December 1738 in County Dublin, Ireland. Montgomery served in the British Army as a Captain before relocating to New York in 1772. In 1775, he was a delegate to the First Provincial Congress of New York and became Brigadier General in the Continental Army. During the Revolutionary War, his troops captured the colors of the 7th Royal Fusiliers and captured Montreal in November 1775. During the assault on Quebec, Canada, in December 1775, he was killed in action. Death and Burial Major General Richard Montgomery was killed in action on 31 December 1775 in Quebec, Canada, and was honorably interred in the Quebec garrison. In 1818, his remains were conveyed to Saint Paul's Chapel and Churchyard in Manhattan, NY, and Congress erected his memorial. |
