Albert Mertz Albert Mertz was born on 26 March 1851 in Richmond, WI. Mertz graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1872. After graduation he was assigned to Coast Survey duty. In the following years he served on the USS Alliance, USS Omaha, USS Minnesota, USS Omaha, USS Constellation, USS Michigan, USS Fern, USS Essex and the USS Glacier. He was promoted to Commander in 1902 and in 1903 was assigned as Captain of the USS Newport. In 1909 he was named the Commandant, Naval Stations Cavite and Olongapo in the Philippines. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in late 1910 and by February of 1912, he became Governor of the Naval Home in Philadelphia. Mertz retired from the Navy on 26 March 1913. Honors The Navy later commissioned the Destroyer Mertz DD-691 in his honor. Death and Burial Rear Admiral Albert Mertz died on 21 July 1936 in San Diego, CA. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
