Thomas Emery Merrill Thomas Emery Merrill was born on 1 June 1875 in Cincinnati, OH. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery. He served in the Philippines and later on the Punitive Expedition into Mexico. During World War I as a Lieutenant Colonel, he went to France as the Commander of the 15th Field Artillery, serving from 1917-18. He was also Chief of Staff of the Hawaiian Division in 1926 at the rank of Colonel. After promotion to Brigadier General in 1933, he commanded the 11th Field Artillery Brigade from 1934-37. He retired from the Army in 1939 after commanding the 3rd Division. In retirement, he was very involved in the community activities of Pacific Grove, CA, and even formed a Civilian Defense organization during World War II. Death and Burial Brigadier General Thomas Emery Merrill died on 18 August 1943 in Pacific Grove, CA, at age 68. He is buried at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove, CA |
