Eugene Bradley McKinney Eugene Bradley McKinney was born on 31 July 1903 in Eugene, OR. McKinney graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1927. In 1941 he was named Commanding Officer of the Submarine USS Salmon and served as her commander until February of 1942. During the USS Salmon's first war patrol, she torpedoed two Japanese Destroyers, sinking one and damaging the other. He next became the Commanding Officer of the Balao-class Submarine USS Skate on 15 April 1943. In September 1943, McKinney was sent as part of Task Force Fourteen to patrol near Wake Island. During this war patrol, McKinney and his command rescued six downed airman. On 25 December 1943, McKinney and the Skate engaged the Japanese battleship Yamato near Truk where he fired four torpedoes with at least one of them striking and damaging the Yamato. The Yamato was damaged to the extent that repairs were necessary, taking the Yamato out of service for several months. On 4 July 1950, McKinney became Commanding Officer of the Tanker USS Cacapon (AO-52) and was immediately ordered to the Western Pacific due to the Korean War breaking out. From June 1958 to June 1959, McKinney served as the Commander of Naval Forces Korea. McKinney retired as a Rear Admiral. Medals and Awards Navy Cross (3 Awards) Death and Burial Rear Admiral Eugene Bradley McKinney died on 15 August 1986. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
