John Donelson Martin was born on 18 August 1830 in Davidson County.

Served in the U.S. Army in the War with Mexico in 1852, after which he attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a medical degree in 1852.

Appointed as Acting Brigadier General, CSA, at Shiloh. Killed on the first day of the Battle of Corinth.

Death and Burial

John Donelson Martin died on 3 October 1862. He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, TX.
