Joseph Smalls
Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps

Joseph Smalls was born on 8 July 1948 in Oakley, SC, the son of William and Bertha L. Smalls.

Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at Fort Jackson, SC, on 15 July 1967. He received his basic training at Parris Island, SC, and graduated in September 1967.

On 5 January 1968, Private First Class Joseph Smalls was serving with 3rd Platoon, G Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Smalls was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device (land mine). His body was recovered.
