Henry Bluett "Harry the Horse" Liversedge
Brigadier General, U.S. Marine Corps

Henry Bluett Liversedge was born on 21 September 1894 in Volcano, CA.

Raised in Central California, he attended the University of California at Berkeley and joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a Private in May 1917. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant in September 1918 while serving in France, he remained on active duty after the conflict then over the inter-war years saw a wide variety of postings including the USS California, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, China, San Francisco, Philadelphia, San Diego, Spokane, and, several times, Quantico, VA.

Liversedge captured a Bronze Medal in the Shot Put at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, competed in the 1924 Paris Olympics, played on successful Marine Corps football teams, and was a boxing coach.

In San Diego at the outbreak of World War II, he was transferred to American Samoa, advanced to Colonel, and assigned to the Third Marine Raider Battalion. Liversedge received his first Navy Cross for the 1943 New Georgia Campaign and in 1944 was assigned to the 28th Marines, 5th. Marine Division. He earned his second Navy Cross for the 1945 invasion of Iwo Jima which led up to the capture of Mount Suribachi.

Following the war, he had multiple California assignments and was promoted to Brigadier General in May 1948. He was named Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Guam, in May of 1949. Liversedge received his final posting as Director, Marine Corps Reserve, in 1950.

Today an athletic field at Camp Lejeune, NC, and an officer's barracks at Quantico carry his name.

Death and Burial

Brigadier General Henry Bluett Liversedge died on 25 November 1951 in Bethesda, MD. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
