Charles Heywood Charles Heywood was born on 3 October 1839 in Waterville, ME. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1858, he rose in rank until he was promoted to Colonel and ninth Commandant of the Marines in 1891. He remained as Commandant as the rank was raised to Brigadier General in 1899 and to Major General in 1902. Under his leadership, the Corps more than tripled in size and saw action in the Spanish-American War and the Peking Relief Expedition. He retired in 1903. Death and Burial Major General Charles Heywood died on 26 February 1915 in Washington, DC. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
