Archibald Henderson Archibald Henderson was born on 21 January 1783 in Dumfries, VA. After entering the U.S. Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant in 1806, he saw action in the War of 1812, and was promoted to Brevet Major. Serving as acting Commandant of the Corps from 1818-19, he was appointed Commandant in 1820, a post he held until his death in 1859, a total of 38 years. He volunteered the Marine Corps for service in the Southern Indian Wars in the 1830s and in 1837. In a battle on the Hatcheluskee River, he was brevetted Brigadier General and given command of a brigade that included two regiments of regular army troops and a Georgia militia regiment, as well as his own Marines. Death and Burial Brevet Brigadier General Archibald Henderson died on 6 January 1859 in Washington, DC. He is buried at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. |
