Herschel J. Goldberg
Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy

Herschel J. Goldberg was born in 1913 in Highland, KS.

Goldberg graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1935. After graduation he spent a year at the Navy Finance and Supply School in Philadelphia. He was then transferred to the U.S. Navy Supply Corps.

During World War II he was stationed in the South Pacific and served as the Supply Officer of the Navy base at Bora Bora and Guadalcanal before being promoted to Commanding Officer of the Naval Supply Depot in Noumea, New Caledonia. As Commanding Officer on Noumea, Goldberg integrated 2,000 enlisted men, an action he later remarked was "the most soul satisfying thing that I've done in my entire career."

After the war, Goldberg received his MBA from Harvard Business School and then served as Logistics Planning Officer on General Eisenhower's NATO Staff. In 1956 he was named Chief of the Naval Supply Systems Command and Chief of the Supply Corps and continued that role until 1967 where he played a dominate role in the continued development of a strong, centrally coordinated and fully integrated supply system.

After being promoted to Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy Supply Corps, he was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to Chief of the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts and Paymaster General of the Navy. For his extraordinary service to the Navy, he was awarded both the Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.

Death and Burial

Rear Admiral Herschel J. Goldberg died on 14 February 2002 in San Mateo, CA. he is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD.
