John Jerome Gaffney John Jerome Gaffney was born on 5 March 1892 in Charleston, SC. Gaffney graduated from the College of Charleston in 1912. Immediately after graduation he was commissioned an Ensign in the U. S. Navy Supply Corps. For three years he served with a torpedo flotilla in Chinese waters and then returned to Charleston for duty in the Navy yard. Between 1918 and 1923 he served successively as Personnel Officer for the Supply Corps in Washington, Naval Secretary to the Governor of the Virgin Island and a Supply Officer in the New York Navy yard. In the late 1920s he served aboard the USS Dobbins and then the battleship USS California. From 1932 and continuing until 1941 he served successively aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, then at the Boston Navy yard, then as purchaser of Naval fuel in Washington, and finally as Supply Officer on the staff of Vice Admiral Charles A. Blakely aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. He was assigned as Commanding Officer of the Naval Supply Depot at Pearl Harbor from 1941 to 1945, which included distribution of naval supplies in the Pacific Theater throughout the entire war. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1942. Medals and Awards Silver Star Medal Death and Burial Rear Admiral John Jerome Gaffney died on 21 November 1947 in Oakland, CA. He is buried at Saint Lawrence Cemetery in Charleston, SC. |
