CAPT JOHN KENT HAYWARD,
John Kent Hayward was, born in Washington DC, on October 18, 1941, to John Paul Hayward and Dorothy Virginia Grauner. His father was a reserve seaman in the Navy and deployed to Asia during WWII. He was Bombed and sunk by the Japanese and thus gave his life for his Country.
His mother remarried Capt. John Stribling and later gave him two half brothers. They were, stationed in England, where John Kent joined the British Boy Scouts earning a rank equivalent to Eagle Scout. After high school, he ended up at the University of Florida, enrolling in their Army ROTC program. It was there he met his wife Corinne D. Appleby and they were married in 1963 and had a son, Mark Brauner Hayward in 1964. He joined the Army while visiting his grandfather at Fort Myers Beach home. He earned his Captain’s bars while at Fort Bragg. In late 1968, he volunteered to go to Vietnam for a one-year tour and departed just before Thanksgiving. He was in a chemical warfare training program in Saigon. After Just 3 weeks, on December 17, 1968, He Boarded a hop flight as part of his training. Both engines failed on take-off and the plane crashed. The 16 of the 45 soldiers were, killed instantly. He was, buried with honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
He was, awarded a Bronze Star, Army Commendation, National Defense, Vietnam Service w/Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medals, Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and Vietnam Civil Actions Unit Citation.
