Emmet Peter Forrestel Emmet Peter Forrestel was born on 2 December 1897 in Buffalo, NY. Forrestel attended Cornell University in 1915 and 1916, and then transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in 1919. He received an MS degree from Columbia University in 1926. He was the Naval Attaché' at the U.S. embassy in Rome from 1935-38. From 1941 to 1943, he was as Aide to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1945 and was assigned as the Operations Officer, Staff of Commander of 5th Fleet, Asiatic waters. On 27 November 1945, command of the cruiser USS Baltimore was transferred to Forrestel. He was the World War II commander, Southwest Japan Naval Occupation force from 1945-46, and Commandant of the Naval Base and Station at Norfolk, VA, in 1946. His last command was as Commander of the 9th Naval District at Great Lakes Naval Training Center from 4 March 1955 to 30 October 1959. Death and Burial Vice Admiral Emmet Peter Forrestel died on 28 December 1979 in Lake Bluff, IL. He is buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, MD. |
