Andrew Hull Foote Andrew Hull Foote was born on 12 September 1806 in New Haven, CT. Foote, a Naval officer, successfully campaigned to end the rum ration in the U.S. Navy in 1862. He was Commander of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, 1858-61. While in charge of Union naval forces on the upper Mississippi, he succeeded in capturing Island Number 10, opening up the lower Mississippi. He was wounded at Fort Donelson in 1862 and was also promoted to Rear Admiral, that year. He was named as Commander of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron in 1863, but died before he could assume command. Death and Burial Rear Admiral Andrew Hull Foote died on 26 June 1863 in New York, NY. He is buried at Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven, CT. |
