On 13 August 1969, Petty Officer Third Class Richard Lee Brown was serving with HA(L)-3, TF 116, U.S. Naval Forces Vietnam, in Kien Giang Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, PO3 Brown died while missing in the crash of the helicopter (due to non-hostile action) in which he was a crew member. His body was recovered.
