Joseph Saville Cony Joseph Saville Cony was born in 1834 at Eastport, ME. A native of Eastport, ME, he was first appointed to acting Ensign on 3 November 1862. He went on to command several successful small-boat expeditions along the coast of Carolina including on board the Western World and as Executive Officer on the Shokokon during the Civil War. On 7 September 1863, he was promoted to Acting Master and served until he was honorably discharged on 7 November 1865. On 10 February 1867, while he was serving on board his merchant command ship, the City Of Bath, the ship was burned and sank off Cape Hatteras. Cony was one of the men who lost their lives in the sinking. His body was never found. The USS Cony was named in his honor. The ship was launched in Bath, ME, on 30 August 1942. Death Joseph Saville Cony died on 10 February 1867 during the sinking of his ship, the City of Bath. His body was lost at sea. |
