Colby M. Chester Colby M. Chester was born on 29 February 1844. Chester graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in September 1863 and participated in operations with the Western Gulf Squadron during the Civil War. While with the USS Alaska he commanded steam launches surveying Salee River in Korea and was fired upon from forts guarding that River's entrance in June 1871. In the Spanish-American War, he was in actions at the Battle of Manila Bay, Philippine Islands, in May 1898. He was promoted to Commander on 15 October 1881; Captain on 12 June 1896; and Rear Admiral on 10 August 1903. He retired from active duty on 28 February 1906. In Retirement He became professor of Naval Science at Yale University in 1917, then Superintendent of U.S. Naval units at Yale, Columbia and Brown Universities. He also founded the Naval Academy Athletic Association in 1891. Death and Burial Rear Admiral Colby M. Chester died on 4 May 1932. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. |
